Mariana Tres
Mariana Tres is a contemporary photographic artist whose conceptual work speaks to the wonders of the natural world and the shadowy ambiguities of history. Two major through-lines that often intertwine in her work, narrative and experimentation, are deftly illustrated in Society for Nebulous Knowledge, Tres’ ongoing project. Encompassing nearly twenty years of artistic practice, it was featured in the recent book Sting in the Tale: Art, Hoax, and Provocation (A. LaFarge, Doppelhouse Press). She has exhibited extensively and has been the recipient of many honors including a unique artist residency at Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mariana Tres attended the San Francisco Art Institute, and earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. Her work is found in many public and private collections including the Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon. She has been awarded artist residencies at Caldera, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics at both their headquarters in Cambridge, MA and at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Mount Hopkins, AZ. She currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon, where she continues her narratives and collaborative experiments with the natural world.
