Courtney L. Black

Courtney L. Black is an Ohio-born poetess and multidisciplinary artist. Her background in Cultural Anthropology and Sociology, Theater, and Media fuels her passion for connecting people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Ms. Black is inspired by collaborative efforts that bring awareness to various social issues within the greater community. Furthermore, her artistic endeavors have strengthened her devotion to spirituality, the natural world, metaphysics, and popular culture. All of which support her through her journey of creative advocacy. She has been recognized and supported by the American Folklore Society, Broadway Advocacy Coalition's Theater of Change & Columbia Law School, GrubStreet’s Boston Writers of Color (BWOC) and the National Social Science Association.

A self-described transcendentalist, Ms. Black aims not to be an artist who solely provides social commentary or superficial observations but is proactive in using her pen and body as agents for social change and true community renewal. Her ongoing work includes readings from ANIMALIA (2020), her first self-published poetry collection, as well as her work on Sankofa Sol’s Centering the Care and Education Work of Black and Brown Nannies During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Performative Inquiry (in development).

Ms. Black divides her time between her hometown of Cleveland and wherever Spirit leads her.
